Slack

Prerequisites

  • A Slack workspace where you can install apps.
  • Admin or app-management permissions in that workspace.

1. Create a Slack App

  1. Open api.slack.com/apps → Create New App → From scratch.
  2. Name it (e.g. isthisthing.online Alerts) and pick your workspace.

2. Enable Incoming Webhooks

  1. In the app settings sidebar click Incoming Webhooks.
  2. Toggle Activate Incoming Webhooks to On.
  3. Click Add New Webhook to Workspace.
  4. Choose the target channel (e.g. #incidents) → Allow.

You will receive a URL like:

https://hooks.slack.com/services/T00000000/B00000000/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Copy this URL — you will need it in the next step.

3. Add the integration in isthisthing.online

  1. Navigate to Integrations → New Integration.
  2. Select Slack as the type.
  3. Fill in the fields:
FieldValue
NameA descriptive label, e.g. Slack #incidents
Webhook URLThe URL from step 2
ChannelLeave empty (the webhook posts to the channel you selected)
  1. Enable the trigger events you need (created / resolved / updated).
  2. Click Save.

4. Test

Click the Test icon next to your integration in the list. A test message should appear in your Slack channel within a few seconds.

Workspace & MonitorNames and IDs for quick reference
TimestampsStarted, resolved, and emitted times in UTC
LinksButtons to open the incident or workspace dashboard

Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
No message receivedVerify the integration is enabled and at least one trigger event is on. Check the webhook URL is still active in Slack.
invalid_blocks errorRegenerate the webhook in Slack and update the URL in your integration settings.
Wrong channelIncoming Webhooks post to the channel chosen during creation. Create a new webhook for a different channel.

Security

  • Treat webhook URLs as secrets — do not commit them to source control.
  • Rotate the URL immediately if it is exposed.
  • Restrict integration management to workspace Owners and Admins.
